Shaw’s Painting ‘The Garden of Earthly Delights III’ Earned $5.50mn at Sotheby’s

The Garden of Earthly Delights III

A colorful creation by Indian artist Raqib Shaw viz. “Garden of Earthly Delight III” not only fetched $5.49 million but set a record for Indian art at the Contemporary Art sale at Sotheby’s here. Demonstrated at the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York on 15 October, the painting is the record breaking monumental work ever auctioned by the artist. This is a clear indication of the Indian contemporary art approaching on the global platform.

Painted using eastern cultures of India, China and Japan; the designs and forms depicted in Sha’s creation recalls oriental carpets, Persian miniatures and Kashmiri Jamavar shawls. Viewing Shaw’s creation is not less than an entry into a kaleidoscope sunken dream.
